To make the work easier and fulfilling, below are some guidelines that can help you when choosing formal dining room furniture for your home.

First asses the space available in the area you wish to furnish because a proper setting requires an adequate amount of space to be able to bring out the look well. Therefore, it is important that you ensure that enough space is available that will accommodate all your fittings. If the space is not enough, then consider getting a standard set that does not require a lot of space because their sizes are not space consuming and if possible get a set that has been customized depending on the space available. One can also look for a set that is more welcoming to anyone who enters the house. A good looking and friendly setting will always make your guest comfortable in your home. Select a set that matches the existing surrounding of your home in terms of color so as to achieve a uniform look.

Also consider a design that is of good quality and one that will compliment well with the interior color of the room. You can opt to go for wooden sets which are most popular because a lot of people prefer them compared to other types of sets. Also you can select other available sets made of other materials such as plastic, rattan, glass or even those made from wood that is light in weight.
Whatever you go for will be determined by your personal taste and preferences and also how you intend to use them. If you are considering furnishing your house, the above tips and guidelines can help you to choose the best formal dining room furniture for your home.

The antiqued and aged style of design can be beautiful but it’s easy to tip over into looking like an old folks home. Here are a couple simple rules to follow that will make our home look like it’s been plucked out of the past in a classy way.

Avoid bright colors and light prints for wall paper. You want to display the regal quality of the days gone past. Not the hospital like quality of a retirement home. Medium depth reds and gold complimenting dark rich, natural grain hardwood will achieve this nicely.

Sometimes it’s the simple things. High quality silk flowers were, at one time, a regular occurrence in many houses. You’ll want to avoid having contemporary photographs. It’s best to have paintings on canvas or other hand done pieces of art. A modern photo will break the design. If you must use them, then I suggest alerting them to black and white or sepia ton before displaying them. Also, get a good picture frame. Oval was a popular design in the past and breaks up the wall more than a square frame. The more ornate the frame the better it will add to the design. Think about design elements such as these when starting your design so you can plan to utilize them.

Keep everything impeccably clean. From the nooks and crannies of the ornate furniture to the cheap silk flowers, you want this home to look like a museum quality display, not an abandoned house at the end of the street. Our guests don’t need to be reminded of a horror movie when they stay with you. Don’t forget the details either. Cobwebs seem to be attracted to artificial flowers in a way that is supernatural.

These are just some ideas to think about while you design your beautiful new home. There is a lot to think about but if you pull it off well it’s a design that nobody will ever forget.

Many people greatly appreciate antique dining room furniture, especially one that is made of teak. If you are one of the many people who would like to own such an exquisite piece of antique furniture, then you must first understand some special key points about this kind of furniture. If by any chance, you already possess a solid understanding about wooden furniture, then knowing learning more about teak would prove to be an easy task. Get to know certain specifics about teak furniture and you’re on your way to owning a fantastic piece of furniture.

Teak can be considered as just like any other furniture. You can see it in a variety of finishes in many different hues. The finish may be the glossy type, the matted kind or the antique fabricated kind. However, there are fortunate cases when teak wood can be found in real antique condition.

In terms of limitation, there is very little of it. You can also find many modern and contemporary designs in both dining tables and chairs that are made of teak. Though contemporary, they may still resemble their antique dining room furniture counterpart, which means, they are reproductions or have been fabricated, or, they may be made from real antique dining table parts for instance. The latter are the ones that have been widely known for many years now and they never fail to amaze antique buyers and sellers alike. Whether you are looking for antique dining room furniture pieces that can accommodate an intimate group pr a large gathering, those made of teak will definitely not fail you.

Teak furniture varies in prices as well. Price will depend on the size, whether the teak wood is antique or not, how large of a piece is it, and the demand for it. Be sure to start setting aside money if you really want to own an antique piece of teak dining room furniture and start shopping around as soon as possible so as to gauge how much you will need, which style you want and how long you would need to save up. Doing so will ensure that you get the best quality antique teak dining room furniture for your home.

In the event that you can’t find what you’re looking for, or none of the styles you see appeal to you, you can go to any online and local store and ask if they can have one custom-made for you, even those that will use real antique parts that could be reconstructed to make it look like the piece you want for your dining room.

The possibilities are endless for antique dining room furniture. You just have to be patient enough in order to get the best quality furniture for you.

One of the primary things you need to know before changing anything about the appearance of this particular antique oak furniture is that doing so will diminish its value to avid collectors as they place a superior value to antiques that hasn’t been restored or has remained unchanged throughout the years. Antique dining tables for instance are not meant to be “cleaned up” because for them, originality and age is of primary importance.

However, for those of you who are more concerned about its aesthetic value rather than its monetary value, it is good to know that you can restore your antique oak furniture, even if it is an overused, worn torn, weathered and very old antique dining table. Whether it’s a big or small piece of oak antique dining furniture you have there, or any kind of antique oak furniture for that matter, be warned that doing so will take up so much of your money, time and effort. However, once restored to its original appearance, it will definitely make your home more beautiful, cozy and stylish.

Restoring an old oak dining table can be made fun as long as you employ a proper mindset. Patience is need and the acceptance of the fact that this is going to be a slow and long process.

General Procedure:

Inspect how badly damaged the furniture is and decide which part need to be changed and replaced.

Have the necessary tools handy like a can of paint and varnish stripper. These things can damage the wood so be careful not to expose the wood too long. Carefully follow the instructions at the back of the can of the paint and varnish.

Once the old varnish has been removed, buy a lot of sandpaper. Orbital sander oak is great as long as you don’t go too far as to leave sanding marks on the wood. Consult with your local home fix-it store to know which type of varnish and stain to use.

Depending on the design of your antique dining room furniture, it can take several months to finish this project especially if there are carvings on the wood. If you have doubts whether you can do this, you can always pay a specialist or professional to do this but it will further cost you.

Antique mahogany reproduction furniture is very beautiful and elegant due to its carved patterns and rich coloring. They are usually of the Victorian and more classic styles, and used more for entertaining, hence, they better fit inside dining rooms. These pieces of furniture can give further character to the room and should be the main attraction. Say, in your dining room where you usually entertain your family and guests with special dinner parties, a mahogany reproduction of antique dining room furniture can serve its purpose well. It has great effect because of its stunning beauty and it can also last for many years, but not as expensive as the antique one.

The mahogany wood used to make mahogany antique reproduction furniture is imported from Africa. The pieces are reliable, durable and can last a lifetime. Once you get something like this, take care of it the same way you would a real antique dining room furniture. Cover it with soft table cloth for everyday use while from time to time, reveal its real beauty on very special occasions.

These days, sales occur on a much more regular basis. So, whenever you plan to do a makeover for your home, you will always find bargains waiting to be bought, and even antique furniture waiting to find its new owner.

The beauty of purchasing antique dining table for instance, in a sale is that you can maximize the value of your hard earned money. Antique furniture is no longer just for the wealthy. Middle class folks can purchase one too from garage sales and bargain sales. Usually, you not only get the antique dining table you want, you can even get the antique dining chairs that go with it too.

However, when people come to sales, they are more often than not tempted to buy other things even if they don’t really need it. They get attracted to the low prices and they end up buying more than they can handle. The trick is to scout first for the things which you actually need like an antique dining table and stick to that item. After visiting a couple of bargain stores or garage sales, pick the one you most like with the best value it can offer.

Furthermore, don’t forget to sign up for heir newsletters. By doing so, you get to have a first look at the things these bargain stores offer every month. You can be at the comforts of your own home and you get to see the other amazing items that are up for grabs, with discounts through the roof! Think of how much you will save simply by signing up.

When you do purchase your first real antique dining room furniture or any antique piece for that matter, be happy about the fact that you got yours for only a fraction of the price that most wealthy people get them for. Moreover, a dining room furniture sale is a great way to purchase an heirloom piece that you can pass on to your family for many years to come. You can start making memories with your spouse and kids and the rest of your family with your antique dining table. Memories will become more precious as years go by so don’t further delay this benefit and start scouting for fabulous furniture pieces at sales and bargain furniture shops.

- Have an expert evaluate the true value of the furniture.

By taking these two things into consideration, you are more likely to get the furniture you want with the appropriate price it deserves rather than have something that is way over its price, or worse, get something that is a mere duplicate of the original.

While it is true that these symbols make the pieces of antique furniture look more beautiful and appealing, especially to Chinese furniture collectors and lovers, there are actually deeper meanings behind all these drawings and symbols.

Look at these basic symbols below and find out what they mean:

Gods – Chinese history dates back to the year 3,000 B.C., as such, it is no surprise that many of the gods and goddesses being represented in the symbols are also linked to the various aspects of human behavior and emotions all throughout these years. The top tier of gods is called the Stellar Triad, while the second tier of gods is called the 8 Immortals. They frequently appear in Chinese art and furniture pieces. These gods represent marriage (Hexiangu), liberation from lust and greed (Lu Dongbin), household peace and harmony (Zaojun), happiness (Xi) and many others.

Animals – Because the culture and history of China also entails the study of the natural world, animals are also represented in the antiques as well. This animal imagery includes monkeys to depict human spirit, bats for good luck, turtles for immortality and other indigenous animals within the region. Each of these animals has a connection as to how each of the gods are also depicted.

Plants (Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers) – These plants are a collective representation of nature that are also often found in antique Chinese furniture. Longevity is represented usually by bamboo, mushrooms, and pine; wealth is represented by flowers; progeny is represented by lotus; and joy is represented by peaches.

There are still other signs and symbols carved in antique Chinese furniture. Generally, coins and water ripples depict wealth, fans depict goodness, vase depicts peace, etc. By including these Chinese symbols in antiques, they add more visual impact to the finished products and can serve as messengers of wealth, peace, good luck, etc. to its intended owners, which can be passed from one generation to the next.

Alexander Roux is known for using new technology in making his furniture pieces. He used steam powered saws and routers which helped make shaping his wood a lot faster. By saving time in this process, he was able to devote more quality time in carving ornate designs into his wood.

Alexander Roux is not just known for using new technologies, but more especially so with Rococo pieces. He did not limit himself with only one kind of popular style though. He diversified and mastered the changing fashions of his day. He did the 1840s Gothic Revival, the Elizabethan and Renaissance style in the 1850s and the Neo-Greco in the 1860s.

Roux continued crafting high quality pieces for wealthy clients like William B. Astor. In 1853, an exhibition of his work took place at the Crystal Palace in New York City. It is no surprise that his business was very profitable and reportedly earned around $500,000 in the 1870s which is a huge amount during that time.

For a well-known furniture maker, Roux married three times and had six children in the process. He retired in 1881 and turned over the business to his son Alexander J. Rox who mainatined it until 1898.

Most of Roux’s work exudes a certain individuality of thought and a freedom of form which makes his furniture pieces very desirable among today’s collectors of antique Victorian furniture. His Rococo pieces have unusual fruit and animal carvings like those of pineapples, pomegrenates, deer crabs and dogs tp name a few. His furniture are usually made of fancy woods like walnut.

In 2000, one of Roux’s elaborate and elegant sideboards were displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The exhibit was called Art and the Empire City, 1825-1861.

Alexander Roux died in 1886.

Antique dining room furniture is one of the most used sets when it comes to antique furniture. As such, the wear and tear they get over the years is graver than the living room furniture for instance. If you happen to own an antique set of dining table made of oak or mahogany, the best thing that you can do to help make it look new and well taken care of is to apply some finishing. However, getting the cheaper ones do not guarantee the quality you would like your antique dining table and chairs to have. If you want to make your antique furniture look posh and elegant again, you can apply French polishing to the wood. This practice originated from the olden times when skills and craftsmanship were deemed very important and when the makers of these furniture pieces were very much willing to take the time and create the most elegant and beautiful finish to a piece of quality furniture.

French polish is a process and not a particular product. It is a technique used in wooden furniture to make its finish more lustrous to the eyes. It first became popular back in the 19th century and was often applied to expensive furniture of the noble families. But because the process is very labor intensive, and can only be afforded by the rich, many of the furniture manufacturers opted for the easily mass produced processes instead. True enough, by the 1930’s, other finishing methods developed which became more popular, such as sprays, causing the process of French polishing its natural death.

However, after several decades have passed, and antique furniture came to be the trend competing with the more modern styles of furniture, French polishing came back into the picture. Because it is the best way to preserve and restore old pieces of furniture, more and more furniture restorers started using them again. It helps bring back the original luster of the furniture, creating a mirror-like finish that adds beauty and quality to the antique furniture.

Because dining room furniture is one of the most used sets in any home, if you happen to own one, it is the first to go through the process of refinishing. Through the French polish, the colors are enhanced as if you are seeing your dining room table and chairs back when they were first made decades or even centuries ago.

French polishing is easy if you know what you are doing. You just add denatured alcohol to a substance called Shellac. You can choose a shade that matches the original color of your dining room furniture. Before polishing, make sure you use a cotton wool wrapped in a square of white cotton as your rubbing pad. Rub in circular motion and apply this in all parts of the furniture. This can take several days depending on how huge your furniture is.

The downside with this process is that French polishing tends to be heat sensitive so be careful about setting a hot cup of coffee on your wooden table. Use a coaster, a placemat or a table mat. If worse comes to worst, you can always refinish again. That’s the beauty with antique dining room furniture; you can always have it looking like brand new again.
